Waiting perpetually for a perfect time

By Goke Ilesanmi

As human beings, we almost always like to wait for a perfect time to take necessary action about our plans. Is there any time called “Perfect”? I need your answer, please. Some years ago, a friend of mine bought a car and got a man to drive it and also teach him driving because he could not drive. As expected, whenever the man wanted to teach my friend, the learner sign “L” would be hung on the number plate with the driver sitting beside him and guiding him. Surprisingly, after one year of learning, my friend was still using the “L” sign and totally dependent on the driver to guide him while driving. I was compelled to ask why he was still using the “L” sign and could not drive unguided. He said he wanted to PERFECT his driving skills even when the driver had been encouraging him to be driving alone. Read the rest of this entry

Adversity can advertise your ability

By Goke Ilesanmi

ADVERSITYLife is indeed full of ups and downs that are often inevitable. These ups and downs can be summarised as “Adversity”, that is, a situation in which one has a lot of problems. Most times, adversity is destined to advertise your latent potential or ability.
As a young boy, I had always thought adversity was a very bad aspect of life until I was proved wrong one day. My mother sent me on an errand to a friend’s house and there was a fierce dog there that was always ready to prevent your entry. Despite the possibility of the dog’s attack, I took the risk of going there because of the respect for my mother and exceptional generosity of her friend, which even made a friend of mine to accompany there. We were about entering the house when the dog suddenly came out from its hiding place, barking repeatedly and pursuing us desperately. Read the rest of this entry

Empowering yourself with interpersonal skills

By Goke Ilesanmi

I was held up in traffic jam one day, and as I was thinking about how I could wriggle my way out, a hawker came close to me and rudely knocked on my window glass. I thought he wanted to draw my attention to something on my car, so I wound down. To my amazement, he said he had been signalling to me for some minutes to buy something from him but I did not look at him. That was why he had to knock on my glass like that. I looked at him angrily and then told him to leave. Read the rest of this entry

What self-image do you see in your mirror?

By Goke Ilesanmi

At a wedding reception where I was serving as the master of ceremonies in Lagos recently, one of the people that naturally ought to help handle one of the areas of the programme whatyouseerefused (before the actual day) to accept to come out and speak for just two minutes on the day. He turned down all my appeal that I would equip him with necessary training before the day so that he could be confident.

Possible excuse

If we had not had enough time ahead of us to do necessary confidence-boosting training and rehearsal, I would have attributed his fear to lack of knowledge of what to say, technically referred to as ignorance-induced fear. Given the way he closed his mind to the idea of ever coming out to face the crowd on the day, I could sense that he was (and is) suffering from psychological fear that borders on self-perception. We did not have any option but to use another person who was ready for me to train him to perform the task. And he performed brilliantly and was applauded by the audience. At this point, the man who had refused to perform the task became jealous and dejected.

Every human creature has been created to live a meaningful and fulfilling life. This means that deep within us lies a seed of greatness and success itching for germination and harvest. We have the ability to accomplish our God-given purpose, but allowing our talent or ability to manifest is our responsibility. And self-image is critical here. Please let me ask you this question: “What self-image do you see in your psychological mirror?” You need necessary empowerment to break your negative psychological mirror if you have one.

Self-discipline as a gateway to success

By Goke Ilesanmi

Discipline is about being able to control your own behaviour so that you can do what you are expected to do without being told by anybody. It is also a way of training your mind or learning to control your behaviour and obey rules. It is also known as “self-discipline”. We need a large dose of self-discipline to solve life’s problems.
